CAOS wins 2007 Rozsa Award for Innovative Business Posted on 2007-09-25 16:39:11

(From the Rozsa Foundation): Bring together a local artist, a team of professional engineers and inmates from a federal penitentiary and your creativity is bound to be noticed. And so it was as Calgary Animated Objects Society’s (CAOS) Xstine Cook was today announced as the 2007 recipient of the Innovative Business Practice Award from the Rozsa Foundation.

The Innovative Business Practice Award is one component of the larger Rozsa Award for Excellence in Arts Management and consists of a computer and web consultation package from Vital Business Solutions worth $2,000.

Xstine's Innovative Business Practice Award stems from the presentation of the Spirit of the White Buffalo, a massive puppet entered in the 2007 Calgary Stampede Parade. Visualized by a local artist, designed by professional engineers and constructed by inmates at a federal penitentiary, the Buffalo encompasses the true spirit and extent of outreach that CAOS brings as it embraces a wide range of races, cultures and a broad section of society.

Rozsa Award Director, Brenda-Ann Marks comments that “Xstine’s project stood out from the other submissions because of the demonstration of powerful community engagement. While strategic alliances were key to the creation of the White Buffalo puppet, from an administrative perspective, they also helped build organizational profile, and significantly increased human and financial resources for the company. For these reasons, the Rozsa Award Jury felt that Xstine is most deserving of the business innovation prize”.

“Our goal is to increase the profile of the arts management profession, and to recognize outstanding work that is on par with successful businesses in the for-profit world”, says Rozsa Foundation President, Mary Rozsa de Coquet.

The Rozsa Award for Excellence in Arts Management is presented by the Rozsa Foundation, a philanthropic organization that works to promote the Arts through grants, community involvement and public dialogue.

Posted on 2007-09-25 16:31:13   Mooky Kisses Boom Town Goodbye

Cirque Du Soleil Star Quits Calgary for New York!

Beloved clown and acting instructor Mooky Cornish is abandoning Calgary’s burgeoning economy for the bright lights of New York City. The rising star of Cirque Du Soleil’s “Varekai“ has called Calgary home since 1998. Recently Mooky premiered her new solo show, “The Glories of Gloria Revue” to sold-out crowds at Calgary’s International Festival of Animated Objects. After a west coast tour from Vancouver to San Francisco, Mooky is now hitting the road.

Mooky will perform at the New York Clown Theatre Festival October 21 - 28. The festival features artists from the USA, Canada, Germany, Spain, Norway, & France. In addition to theatre shows, there is a public pie fight, clown Olympics and a clown funeral. The invitation is a welcome opportunity to perform for a broader public. “Theatre should not merely be a commodity, like it is treated here.” Mooky noted, “Theatre is an integral part of life for the good of all.”

With its more developed cabaret culture, and numerous small and medium sized venues, the call of the East for this solo clown has become too strong to resist. “I’ll do my best, really hustle the NY scene, then go to Montreal and hustle there. I receive so many notices for cabarets down East. Once there, I’ll have a better opportunity to get a good gig.”

Mooky is not the first Calgary artist to find the boom is bust for them. Brenda Whiteman and Peter Stinson of Red Smarteez relocated to Saskatoon in April, and Eric Amber of the Three Canadians moved to Montreal 3 years ago. Amber has since opened a burgeoning improv venue, Theatre St Catherine. Mooky said, “I love Calgary, but for me to succeed here, I have to be a producing and marketing genius. I’m a clown. I just need to perform, not make a website.”

Mooky hopes to hustle hard enough to get herself “across the pond” to Europe for the summer festival season, with plans to return to Calgary for her sweetheart’s birthday. She is open to any possibility that opens up, including failure because “that is the nature of clown. The fall is when comedy happens.”

Mooky will be hosting a fundraiser farewell performance of “The Glories of Gloria Revue” at: Velocity Motion Werks Circus Space (#120 – 13226 Macleod Trail SE -beside Canyon Meadows Movie Theatre) on: Sunday Oct 7 at 4 pm.
Tickets are available at the door, and are by suggested donation of $100.

White Buffalo Takes the Trophy Posted on 2007-09-20 10:39:55

After more than two years in the making, Spirit of White Buffalo, a 12 foot tall white buffalo puppet, won first place for “Best Western Theme at the 2007 Stampede Parade, beating out 165 other entries.

Photo by Sean Dennie. See more pics on Facebook at:
Spirit of White Buffalo.

Created and co-ordinated by Calgary Animated Objects Society (CAOS), the White Buffalo was accompanied by Wandering Spirit traditional dancers, Young Spirit Voices youth drama group, and a wagon team of Clydesdales.

The 40 person entry was viewed by 400,000 people on the parade route with many thousands more watching via television on July 6.

Over 300 incarcerated men in Drumheller Institution watched the coverage closely that day to catch a glimpse of “Spirit of White Buffalo”. From March to June, 2007, more than fifteen offenders in the Native Brotherhood program and five in the Vocational Welding program put in an excess of five hundred hours creating the twelve foot tall giant white buffalo.

The welders fabricated a steel rod structure according to a scale model built by Ramsay metal artist Jeff De Boer.

The Brotherhood, who are known for sewing tipis, sewed the canvas and plastic robe.

The fourteen-foot long four person human powered cycle that carries the buffalo was designed and built by a group of mad cyclists in Calgary and Golden BC.

As a spin-off to the project, four offenders carved an impressive alabaster white buffalo sculpture, and donated it to CAOS to raffle off. Proceeds will support Young Spirit Voices, a drama initiative for urban aboriginal youth in Calgary.

Another offender drew an illustration of White Buffalo Calf Woman, which has been printed onto t-shirts for Spirit of White Buffalo volunteers.

Spirit of White Buffalo will tour around the country and beyond to festivals, powwows and parades for years to come as part of CAOS’s mission to build community through artistic experiences & bring recognition to aboriginal stories.

Spirit of White Buffalo has also been honoured with “Most Original Float” at the Peigan Indian Days Parade on August 5.

“The White Buffalo is capable of bringing hope, peace, love, and balance to Humankind. The White Buffalo can create dreams and visions for those who behold her. She shines a huge light on darkness and can open the doors in all seven sacred directions, inspiring never before seen ceremonies that embody all of creation.” –Wapsepnashi Equai

CAOS wishes to thank all who helped with the White Buffalo, including, Sean Dennie, Sharon Jinkerson, Solomon Reece, Richard Van Hazendonk, Caitlin Thompson, Duane Flatmo, Ken Beidelman, June Moxon, Rob Ward, Jim Marika, Wayne Schapp, Colin Martin, Karen Mervyn, Chris & Sue Schapp, Jeff De Boer, Judd Palmer, inmates and staff in Drumheller Institution’s Native Brotherhood & Vocational Welding programs, Rodney Big Crow, Young Spirit Voices & their families, Jackie Soppit & Wandering Spirit Native Awareness dancers, Perry T. Hodder & family, Archer Pechawis, the Cook family, CAOS’s Board & Staff, and many dedicated volunteers.

To find out where White Buffalo will appear next, call Xstine Cook at 266-1503 or email the office.

To purchase an Alabaster White Buffalo Sculpture raffle ticket, send $5 to: CAOS, 1030 – 20 Ave SE, Calgary, AB, T2G 1M6.

CURATOR SPENDS DAYS IN JAIL

Since the post-festival afterglow deflation, CAOS Curator Xstine Cook has spent two days in Jail at Drumheller Institution. And she may be doing alot more time there in the future. "The place could use a woman's touch" she noted while strolling across "the Yard" last Friday. Her signature orange coveralls, suddenly no longer such a rare fashion find.

Xstine met with Drumheller Institution's Aboriginal Culture Program participants, to discuss creation of CAOS's Giant Buffalo Puppet. Thanks to a suggestion by Richard Runs Amongst Buffalo, Aboriginal inmates are invited to sew a canvas skin for the massive artwork. The body will be fabricated in steel rod, guided by a scale model designed by fine metal sculptor Jeff De Boer. The welders in the Vocational Program will create the body.

WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM

When completed, the Giant Buffalo Puppet will be seen at festivals, powwows, and parades near you. It will be a human powered kinetic sculpture, and its four person chassis was built by bike freeks in Calgary & Golden this past winter. The road test last Sunday, just before the big snow, bewildered, annoyed and amused residents of Jim Marika's new neighbourhood.

SHOUT IT OUT

CAOS gives a Big Thanks to the chassis crew: Rob Ward, Wayne Schapp, Jim Marika & Nicole, Colin Martin, Trevor Andersen, Chris & Sue Schapp, and Karen Mervyn for all their brains and brawn. And thanks to Richard Runs Amongst Buffalo, Jeff De Boer, Doreen Busch, Kelly Boutin, Rodney Big Crow, Glen Quist, the inmates, and Warden Mike Hanly for their contributions to the project.

YES MEN SAY YES TO CALGARY

Arusha and CAOS are tickled gold lame to announce the YES MEN are coming to Cowtown mid-June to stir up a Stampede Stomp Around - events that offer alternatives to Stampede, while embracing the spirit of community and summer celebration.

The Yes Men are notorious for political satire performances, presenting preposterous theories at serious corporate conferences.

"The Yes Men agree their way into the fortified compounds of commerce, ask questions, and then smuggle out the stories of their hijinks to provide a public glimpse at the behind-the-scenes world of business. In other words, the Yes Men are team players... but they play for the opposing team."

Check out their website to grasp the myriad of outrageous piss-takes on serious issues. Keep tuned to find out about workshops and performances in Calgary in June. The Yes Men & their film will be featured as an Arusha Action Film at the Plaza.

Day 8 - Festival Blog by Michal Lavi Posted on 2007-01-26 18:02:31

Paul Zaloom opened his show last night in the main stage. A maverick shadow puppeteer he folded the story of Karagoz, a queer-secular-humanist-Quaker-Buddhist- agnostic-Arab immigrant, or in short, the mother of all enemies. Paul is an acute political satirist, sharp, cynical and outrageously funny. He is juggling dozens of shadow puppets and articles, all intricately made and ingenious in their application, and the best part is that they accompany a witty text.
Paul performs again tonight and tomorrow night.
And for more trivial things; we do sell raffle tickets as those who came to the shows must know by now. The first prize is a gorgeous skull bicycle that looks like a Harley Davidson for the urban yuppies. The second prize is a Ronnie Burkett hand puppet which after all the rumors that were circulated might increase in value. One can also win a spa package for swirl, a spiritual haven in the heart down town yoga alley. And finally the fourth prize is a 1974 Pontiac Ventura, a rusty red monster, complete with MP3 player, a true ‘chick’s you don’t want to bring home to meet your mother’ magnet or a ‘guys you should not be dating if you had common sense’ enticement.
Please remember that everyone that buys a ticket is a winner as all proceeds go towards financing the festival in 2009. With chance to win one of these magnificent prizes and getting good karma points for a measly $5, it’s the best deal in town.
Festival goers are also asked to kindly fill a survey for the festival. These surveys are Xsitne’s, the curator and the Joan of Arc of puppetry in Calgary, Canada and the entire universe, apple of the eye. Once this was established, our volunteers rose up to the challenge so even if you managed to avoid buying a raffle tickets, you filled the survey up. Such is the life at a young and blooming festival.

Posted on 2007-01-25 14:48:24   The Glories of Gloria and more- blog by Michal Lav

So much for the good intentions for writing a daily blog, as festivals hectic demands increased and drinking at the Auburn took precedence.
The Glories of Gloria Revue opened on Tuesday night at the vertigo and indeed it was glorious. Going on stage with an enthusiastically ornamented white, puffy dress adorned with bows and beads, looking like a creamy meringue, or a Christmas tree in a heartfelt Christian house, Gloria entered the stage.
Gloria is a “small town gal” that her sole life ambition is to participate in a Broadway spectacle and is one clown tour de force which is silly and hysterically funny. Mooky’s comic timing is genius and her show has the nostalgic, slapstick, Laurel and Hardy feel to it. The closing scene where Gloria dances in an elaborate costume, with a choir girl moves to climb every mountain, a song that could not have been more wrong is ingenious. The Glories of Gloria Revue still plays one more show on Friday at the Vertigo.

Even though Get off the Cross, Mary is over and the crew is safely back in Edmonton (as far as we know), I just thought I will share an observation. In one of the funniest scenes of the play Jesus puppet is in a public washroom examining graffiti written on the urinals. One of them gives the name of a famous puppeteer (which the festival mockingly killed before) as a reference for good time. It is to the credit of the audience in this play that they gasped at this moment, raising their hands and covering their mouth in shock and terror of that blasphemy. It was not nearly as dramatic as when Jesus is betrayed by more than a kiss and is busted by cops at the eve of his crucifixion.
SUNDAY JAN 21-blog by Michal Lavi Posted on 2007-01-23 11:31:39

The third day of the festival started again at the Art Gallery of Calgary with Mask Movement Workshop by Robert Faust. A mask master, Robert Faust explores the relationship body movement and mask, a character development through physical expression. Bringing together dancers and a choreographer a visual artist and mask curious, the participants were shown how to tweak their body one limb at the time.

At the Opera house, Get off the Cross, Mary! was playing again in case somebody failed to get offended yesterday. Many more rose to the challenge and filled the venue. Just as shocking as it was the previous day, the show kept beating and biting on clichés and extorting shameful groans of laughter.

Tomorrow features Puppets on Screen at noon at Bankers Hall Auditorium for the down town crowd and the unemployed who can come and see a show at the middle of the day.

At 6:00 PM Arthur Pechwais will give a lecture at the Triangle gallery on Success without College. Although for some, it might be too late, as they spent a good part of their youth and a considerable amount of money that legally belongs to the bank, they should still come. Performance artist, Arthur Pechwais, will give a condensed history of Aboriginal New Media.

At 8:00 PM, Canada’s foremost puppet wizard Ronnie Burkett will read from his latest work in progress: Billy Twinkle: Requiem for a Golden Boy at the Vertigo Theatre.

And finally at 9:30, at the vertigo as well, the Red Smarteez Marionettes (not to be confused with the candy) will present the Kay stories, a show about family and memory.

A grand day, that shouldn’t to be missed, indeed.

Posted on 2007-01-21 20:52:56   SATURDAY - JAN 20 - Blog by Michal Lavi

The official second day of the festival opened bright and early with a Puppet Making for Kids with Jacquie Paul at the art gallery of Calgary. Sponsored by the ING it was free of charge. Jacquie is a gifted artist with divine patience and a never-ending bag of tricks that transforms bits and pieces into clever puppets. Future festival goers and craft-brave (and is some cases, craft-challenged) parents spent the morning creating puppets and maybe unleashing the puppeteers within their prodigies.

At 2:00 PM the Chiodo Brothers, the master minds behind the puppetry in Team America: World Police introduced Stop Motion animation at the Art Gallery. It was a rare opportunity to see the volume of work that they have done over the years. It was evident from the start that the Chiodo Brothers love what they do. Their passion and enthusiasm for animation and everything that is puppet related has never dwindled in the twenty some years they have been working professionally. And their enthusiasm is catching. The audience was mesmerized and enamored with them.
Listening to them speak is a quite an experience by itself as they seem to be sharing the same train of thought, adding to each other's words and sometimes even completing sentences for one another. It was quite animated!
Charlie, Stephen and Edward Chiodo have been making puppets and filming them since they were kids. They have done it all, from live puppetry with actors, costumes and make up through stop motion to animatronics, and "cg" - computer generated, experimenting with different materials and techniques.

The 7:30pm show had every parental advisory attached to it, together with several other warnings. Or, as Trevor Anderson, the wickedly talented assistant producer of the festival, and the director of Get off the Cross Mary put it just before the show began, “if you didn’t see the signs warning about blasphemous and gay content…well, you’re f*cked”. It was a fair observation.
It pretty obvious that Trevor Anderson and who ever else is concerned with Get off the Cross, Mary! are going straight to hell. It was quite surprising that they did not get there last night. To roaring laugher they played their show, stretching the boundaries of blasphemy. Crude and disrespectful, achingly funny with plunges into bad taste, they re-wrote the passion of Christ with jubilance and disgrace. Jesus came back as a black, sassy, controlling gay queen who puts history right about the sexual orientation of the savior, who did after all spend most of his time surrounded by young men "in dresses with soft names". And what a venue for such a show! the Opera Centre, a former church. It was surprisingly well acted which is often a wild card with Fringe shows, which is where this show was born. Certainly not for everyone, it was a true fringe show and as such found its natural habitat with the Animated Objects Festival. It is playing again Friday, so there is one more opportunity to catch the show.

The last event for Saturday was “Behind the Scenes” of Team America: World Police, the Chido brother’s most well known film at the Uptown Theatre. Apparently it wasn’t an easy choice for them to do the movie. Haviing never made or worked marionettes before, they felt the movie could jeopardize their reputation if they were not be able to pull it off. They refused Matt Stone and Trey Parker, (the scandalous creators of South Park and Trevor Anderson’s neighbors in Hell), twice before accepting “one of the biggest challenges of their careers”.
It is astonishing to get a glimpse and realize what an enormous amount of work, craftsmanship and coordination is involved in such a project. Following their talk with clips from the movie and stills from the making of, they shared anecdotes allowing a glimpse not only to the process of making the film, but also to the eccentric personalities of Matt and Trey. Trivia gems such as Matt requested the puppet of Michael Moore to be filled with ham before they blew it up. That the vomit in the elaborate vomit scene was made of green pea soup and bacon bits. The puppeteer that animated Lisa’s character could not bring himself to do the most raunchy of the explicit puppet sex acts ever seen on screen.
Bringing examples of their work they invited the audience to check out, feel and touch the puppet of Gary, the hero of the movie. They also brought with them puppets skulls (Lisa, Samuel L. Jacjson, and more) in which a radio devices capable of controlling their facial expressions was housed. Also for examination were skin types and face masks, and body parts, showing the intricate work and wonderful detail that went into the construction of these puppets.

And so the first day ended with a bang after offering a daring, talented, creative, funny and well, chaotic program. Let the festival continue!

Halloween Scream! Posted on 2005-11-21 15:13:47

Xstine & Mooky, along with Austin Tufts and Keegan Tufford ran a Scary Things workshop at Ramsay School. Lots of kids came out and made ghost rod-puppets, bats, and spiders.
On October 30, CAOS and the Ramsay kids made a terrifying Haunted House for Ramsay's Halloween Scream event! The Haunted House was a little too scary for the smaller kids, but the older kids did a great job of keeping it spooky. Big thank you to Janice Francey, and her lovely girls, Sam, Sarah & Shawna, for helping set up everything, run the front of house, AND tear it all down! We couldn't have done it without you!
